When it comes to shipping special machinery like mini excavator arms, the way the cargo is loaded and secured inside the container can make or break the entire shipment. Recently, we at GB INTL Freight Agency successfully handled the export of several mini excavator arms using 45HQ containers. The project highlighted not only the importance of choosing the right container, but also the role of professional cargo securing techniques to ensure safety during transit.
The 45HQ (High Cube) container is similar in height to a 40HQ, but it’s longer—measuring 13.58 meters (44.6 feet). This extra length provides more flexibility when loading long machinery like excavator arms, which often don’t fit neatly into standard containers.
That said, size limitations still apply. For cargo that is exceptionally tall or longer than 13.58 meters, even a 45HQ may not be suitable. In such cases, we recommend alternative solutions such as flat rack containers or dismantling the cargo for split shipment. We assess each shipment individually to determine the most suitable and cost-effective method for our clients.
In this shipment, the machine exceeded the height limit of standard containers. Our team at GB INTL Freight Agency assessed the cargo dimensions and secured space on a 40FR well in advance, ensuring a smooth loading process at the port.
Although small in size compared to full machines, excavator arms have awkward shapes and heavy metal structures. Without proper securing, they can easily shift or collide during transport—leading to damage such as paint scratches, deformation, or even structural issues. To prevent this, we used two key cargo securing solutions:
We used heavy-duty industrial lashing straps and reinforced hooks, specifically designed for machinery shipments. Combined with anti-slip mats and wooden blocking, these straps held the excavator arms firmly in place. We carefully calculated all lashing points to keep the equipment stable throughout the entire ocean voyage.
For sections that were irregularly shaped or difficult to lash down directly, we fabricated custom steel frames. These were welded and reinforced onsite to minimize movement caused by container vibration. This not only improved safety but also made loading and unloading smoother.
